Food Waste Digital Interactive Reader
Through extensive research, interviews, movie screenings and visits to grocery stores and restaurants, I learned about the comprehensive food waste issue that plagues the United States and Austin, TX. Using my research and excerpts from American Wasteland by Jonathan Bloom, I designed a condensed digital interactive reader to promote the reduction of food waste. The interactive reader was available for the St. Ed's community to read and interact with on an Ipad at Jo's Coffee Shop on Campus.

Food waste happens. In big and small farms, in our grocery stores, in the restaurants we frequently visit, and in our homes. It happens everyday, often out of site and out of mind. The journey our food takes from farm to table has largely become mysterious. Our global food system is so intertwined, so intricate.
Our purpose? Decrease food waste. How? Through education that calls to action. Goal? Create a fun and interactive digital story for students to explore the complex issues of food waste. Medium? The digital interactive short story was available on iPads at Jo’s coffee shop on the St. Edward’s University Campus.
Process work included collecting images, reading articles and books, watching documentaries, conducting interviews, listening to podcasts, and visiting different sites such as grocery stores, restaurants, community gardens and food banks. The design phase included wire-framing, establishing a type system, layout, and user testing. Images courtesy of USDA, Uli Westphal, Brian Finke and various unknown photographers.
